- Being the perfect and finest man
- Obedient: Luke 2:49
- Serving: Mark 10:45
- Having no appearance of evil: John 3-4
- Having the finest personality: Matt. 11:29, 19:14, 21:12-13; Luke 7:38-39, 10:21, 19:41; John 13:23
- His divinity was expressed through His humanity, such as His compassion shown in Luke 7:11-17
- The Lord Jesus Christ lived His human life fully by the Father and by the Holy Spirit. Christ’s human living was fully in God, by God, with God, and for God. – John 6:57, 5:30, 7:16, 8:50, 8:29b, 10:30; Matt. 12:28; Luke 4:1, 4:14
Christ’s Crucifixion
- As the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world: John 1:29; Exo 12:5; Heb 9:28; Heb 10:10, 12; Matt 26:28; 1 John 1:9
- As the brass serpent: Christ is like the brass serpent, He has the form of flesh but no sin and He destroyed Satan and all satanic nature in our flesh: Num 21:4-9; John 3:14; Heb 2:14; Rom 8:3; 2 Cor 5:21; Heb 4:15
- As the last Adam: when Christ died as the last Adam, He terminated the entire fallen creation: 1 Cor 15:45b; Rom 6:6
- As a peacemaker. On the cross Christ broke down all the dividing walls, abolished all the ordinances and slew all the hatred between different people. By the cross we can truly be one: Eph. 2:14-16; Gal 3:28; Col 3:11
- As grain of wheat: through His death He has released His life, so that many grains were produced – we are such grains: John 12:24
- An all-inclusive death: when Christ died He accomplished a work much greater than the creation. Through the cross, God cleaned up every negative thing and released His divine life! Christ triumphed over Satan and all the powers of hell, putting them to open shame – Col. 2:14-15
Christ’s Death as God-man
- Died as a man
- For man’s sin, God required the payment of man’s blood: Rom 3:23; 6:23 . This is why Jesus took on blood and flesh.
- He was also a sinless man, He knew no sin so that He could die for other’s sin. – Rom 8:3; 1 Pet 1:19; Heb. 2:14, 4:15, 9:22, 2 Cor. 5:21
- Died as God
- For an eternal redemption: Heb. 9:14, 12
- To give eternal life: 1 Cor 15:45b; John 12:24; 19:34
Christ’s Resurrection
- God’s vindication of and satisfaction with Christ’s person and work
- The rising of the man Jesus Christ shows God’s approval of His person and work. Christ was raised because of our justification. In fact, for our salvation, the primary thing that we believe in is Christ’s resurrection: Rom 4:25; 10:9
- The victory of Christ’s resurrection
- Christ took away the authority of death and Hades. Christ’s resurrection is also a testimony of His victory over Satan and the world: John 11:25; Heb 7:16; Acts 2:24; John 20:7; Rev. 1:18; Heb 2:14; John 12:31
- The glorification of Christ’s divine life
- Through Christ’s death and resurrection, God, who was concealed in Him was released and made known. This display is what we call Christ’s glorification. He prayed for this just before His death. – John 17:1
- The designation of Christ’s humanity
- Before His incarnation, Christ was already the Son of God in His divine Person (John 1:18)
- Through resurrection, Christ has uplifted His human nature and He was designated out of this resurrection as the Son of God with this human nature (Rom 1:3-4). Because of the process that Christ went through, a man has been brought into the Godhead. Christ, in His human nature has been designated the Son of God: Acts 13:33, Heb 1:5
- His transfiguration into the Life-giving Spirit
- In His resurrection, Christ became a life-giving Spirit (1 Cor. 15:45b); although the Lord Jesus was resurrected with a physical body (Luke 24:39), He was also transfigured into the Spirit (John 7:37-39, 2 Cor 3:17). As the life-giving Spirit He can enliven us and regenerate us to become the children of God.
- His producing of the Church
- Through Christ’s resurrection, the divine life of the Father has been imparted into us and we become the sons of God and brothers of Christ. Christ has become the first among many brothers (Rom 8:29; John 20:17; 1 Pet 1:3; Heb 2:11). The many brothers are blended together to form one Body that refers to the church as the Body of Christ. – John 12:24; 1 Cor 10:17; Eph. 1:22-23
- Being made Lord, the Ruler of the kings on earth, as well as Head over all things. – Acts 2:36, Rev. 1:5, Eph. 1:22
- In His ascension Jesus was also made Christ. Wasn’t He the Christ before His ascension? He was, but not officially. In His ascension the Lord was officially made Christ. – Acts 2:36
- A good way to understand the Lord’s ascension is to think of it as inauguration. He was not the official Savior until His ascension. After His inauguration, Jesus is now the King of kings and Lord of lords. – Acts 5:31, Rev. 19:16
- Christ also has a great work to do from the heavens – He has a heavenly ministry. After being inaugurated into office He has important duties, the greatest three are:
- Christ as Ruler, He administrates all governments and events on earth, for the spreading of the gospel. He rules all creation – Col 1:17; Eph 1:21-22
- Christ as Head over all things to the church, He works to gain His chosen vessels: Eph 1:22-23
- Christ as our High Priest who can sympathize with our weakness – Heb. 4:14-15; 7:25
