God’s creation of man as a Three-Part Vessel

  1. Man in God’s image and likeness: Gen 1:26
  2. Man is a vessel to contain God. This vessel is constituted of three parts: spirit, soul and body— Rom 9:21-23, 1 Thes 5:23; Heb 4:12
    1. The body: the physical part, created by God from the dust of the ground – Gen 2:7
    2. The soul: the psychological part of man (i.e. personality), which is constituted by the mind, emotion, and will – Matt 22:37
    3. The spirit: with the function to contact God and to receive Him.— Eph 3:16, John 3:6; 1 Pet 3:4
  3. The fall of man: Gen 2:9-10, 17; 3:1-6; 1 Tim 2:14; Rom 5:18-19
  4. Man’s need of salvation: under God’s condemnation and wrath, awaiting for His judgment; deadened in his spirit, ruined in his soul, and corrupted in his body: Rom 5:18; John 3:36; Heb 9:27; Matt 25:41; Rev 20:15; Eph 2:1-2; 4:17-18a; 2 Tim 3:2-4; Rom 7:17-18a; 6:6b; 7:24; John 8:44
